History in the Making as Lions progress to Cup Finals

Lightwood Park Football

Kingborough Lions United Football Club and Glenorchy Knights (Croatia-Glenorchy) will compete for the Lakoseljac Cup on June 10 at Clennett’s Lightwood Park. The Lions eventually overcame a fiery Riverside Olympic team in the Lakoseljac semifinal, with some set-piece magic from Greg Downes sealing the game in the dying minutes.

Our women’s team met Launceston United in their semi-final. In a nail-biting match, the game went to extra time. The Lions emerged victorious with a 4-2 win (2-2 at full time) and will face Devonport Strikers in the final at Clennett’s Lightwood Park on June 10

Football Tasmania have chosen Clennett’s Lightwood Park as the venue for the 2024 Statewide Cup Finals and the club is working with FT to host the finals day. This will be the first time Kingborough Lions United FC has had both of its high performance teams in the cup finals.

Kingborough Lions Youth Melbourne Trip

A group of 33 players aged 12 to 17 and accompanying adults recently travelled to Melbourne for a weekend of football experiences.

The group were fortunate to experience two games at the highest level of competition in Australia attending the Melbourne Victory FC V Macarthur FC Isuzu UTE A-league Mens game and the Western United FC V Brisbane Roar Liberty A-league Womens game. 12 of our young players acted as ball people at the women’s game, an ideal opportunity to be up close to the action. A number of our youth were able to meet the players and some had shirts signed.

A highlight of the trip, which inspired young and old, was a private tour of the Home of the Matildas facilities at La Trobe University, a brand new, purpose built facility showcasing state of the art fitness and treatment areas and hybrid (grass and artificial turf) pitches.

Attendees also participated in technical sessions, a dip at the pool (it was hot!) and a trip to the Australian Sports Museum.

Revamped Opportunity for Youth Players

KLUFC is excited to announce a “new look” Youth Development Program for its Youth players (U13-U17). The program is designed to provide a pathway for our Youth players, as mentees, to learn and develop their coaching skills under the supervision of a more experienced KLUFC coach, who will be their mentor.

This mentor-mentee relationship creates an opportunity for both participants to learn from each other and to share experiences and ideas along the way.

What’s are the benefits for participants? For Youth players, partnering up with a coaching mentor will expose them to a range of skills and valuable coaching and life experiences from which they can grow and develop. Our KLUFC coaches are volunteering their time to do with this with them. Youth mentees will take on the role of a Development Coach and be partnered up with a KLUFC Coach mentor and their Junior soccer team for the 2024 season. You will be required to attend their training session and game each week. This is flexible depending on your personal training commitments. If you are doing your Duke of Edinburgh, this volunteer opportunity is worth considering for fulfilling one of your Duke components.

Participants will be required to attend a coaching course run by Football Tasmania, with the cost being covered by KLUFC. In addition, KLUFC will offer five by one-hour facilitated sessions, run monthly throughout the 2024 season, including:

  • • A full induction and outline of the program, meet and greet with your mentor, responsibilities.
  • • How to plan a coaching session and engage junior players.
  • • How to create a positive team culture
  • • Providing and receiving feedback
  • • Evaluation and reflection skills

If you are interested in participating in this program or would like to know more about it, please contact Jane Gibson at [email protected] or on 0409071826.

Lions Break New Ground with Appointment of First Junior Technical Director

Tim Dale 2024

Kingborough Lions United FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Dale to the role of Junior Technical Director – the first time in the Club’s history a dedicated technical role has been allocated to our entire Junior and SAP programs.

“I’m excited to be taking on this role. I’ve been involved with the club, on and off, since playing for Blackmans Bay United as an U/8.

KLUFC have a huge base of juniors, last year it fielded 26 teams with 293 players from U/6 to U/12. I hope to play a role in building this number, in helping ensure that juniors that register with KLUFC have a positive experience playing the game and that those that aspire to improve their skills also have that avenue. Additionally, the role will be about supporting coaches and volunteers, those parents that give up their time to coach during the week and on the weekend, providing them with assistance if they require it.” said Tim

The club has been restructuring to ensure that it can fully support all players and programs as the number of players and coaches continue to grow.

As a player, Tim represented Kingborough Lions, Caledonians, Olympia, Hobart Juventus and Riverside Olympic at senior level and was recently awarded Life Membership at the club. Tim’s coaching experience extends to a range of sports via coordinating sport at Fahan School for 24 years (including football).

“The club has been working hard to ensure we can deliver our programs in keeping with our aspirations, and I am very excited that we have been able to secure Tim in this critical role. As an educator, coach, and footballer Tim brings a wealth of skill, knowledge, maturity and experience to our Junior program space (U5-U12). Our junior members can look forward to an exciting and rewarding season as Tim takes responsibility for technical program delivery for our Junior Program, Skill Acquisition Phase Program and our Discovery Phase Program. This role will also include community and school engagement as we transition the role to full time in May.” said Simon Edwards , Technical Director.
